Fortifications of Gorinchem

Gorinchem still has its original fortified walls. The walls completely encircle the city and you can walk on top of them. The specially constructed walking path offers beautiful views over the rivers, which is unique in the Netherlands! Along the way, take a virtual journey back in time to the Disaster Year of 1672. Three VR poles tell the story of a soldier, citizen, and farmer in the Old Dutch Water Line.

Did you know that you can take a full walk along the city walls? The Fortification Walk is a 5 km route along the city walls and past the highlights from the (mostly military) history of the city. Discover at your own pace the stories behind the beautiful facades and buildings. What was the Toll House used for? What is a bastion? Or a ravelin? Take a break along the way on a bench and enjoy the beautiful views over the river.
